1950s Spring Break Vacation

In the fifties my Dad purchased a brand new 1950 streamline Chevrolet automobile. Our family planned a Spring Break vacation from Tuscaloosa, around the upper half of Florida, and down the east coast to Miami and back home on the western side of Florida.
We invited two friends to go with us (this made 6 in a car!). They were Jane Parker, my best friend and John Parker who was my brother, Randal ‘s age.
No Reservations
My Dad, bless his heart, did not believe in making any reservations. His philosophy was when it was night time; you stopped and found a motel. Sometimes this was not easy. Sometimes we had to drive much further to find a motel or settle for an inferior one.
Alligator Zoo
We stopped in St. Augustine, Florida and went to all the alligator zoos and the historical attractions and then on to Miami where we went into a very fancy restaurant (Dad did not realize that bringing in 4 kids was not kosher). We left before ordering, needless to say.
Then we were off to drive the Tamiami Trail which is US Route 41 which links Tampa with Miami in South Florida. Not much to see, except the Everglades, but many many souvenir shops!
We finished off the trip coming up the west coast of Florida and then home to Tuscaloosa. For us kids it was a great spring vacation trip!
